Eurovision 2014: Russia

With only a handful of artists left to present until we know the full line up for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest we have a look at the country which is undoubtedly to raise an eyebrow or two this year; time to get to know the Russian participants.

Eurovision 2014 official artworkConsidering the current political situation, the eye brows of Europe will undoubtedly raise considerately when mother Russia takes to the stage at the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest. Fulfilling this year’s ‘difficult task’ are twins Anastasiya and Maria Tolmachevy, who have quite a bit of Eurovision experience already. The sisters, won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2006, at the age of nine, with their self written song ‘Vesennij Jazz (The Spring Jazz)’.

For the grown up Eurovision Song Contest, they’ve gone for a sixties sounding pop song ‘Shine’, which had us a little astonished at the lyrics first. Apart from the demand for love, there’s also the following piece of lyric which surely won’t be unnoticed in a few weeks time ‘Living on the Edge, Closer To The Crimecross the line a step at a time’… Oh dear Russia… Oh dear. Sounds like the recipe for an akward moment at the end of the live performance, but more importantly will the televoters and juries leave Russia behind in the semi.

We actually hope they don’t, because despite the controversy, ‘Shine’ isn’t such a bad song. It just needs a lot of tweaking. A victory won’t be the case, but we reckon if Russia does make it to the final, they’ll do pretty well.

Russia takes part in the first semi final, May 6.
